All About Towson, MD

Only 15 minutes north of the city of Baltimore and seat of Baltimore County, Towson, MD is a quaint small town turned suburb with a 2010 population of just over 55,000. The area, first hunted and fished by the Susquehannock people, was first settled by Pennsylvania farmers in the mid 1700s who shipped their agricultural products from the port of Baltimore. First named Towsontown, the village was home to several prominent businessmen and doctors who built large mansions that survive to this day, preserved by the local historical society. The town was separated from Baltimore Town (now the city) by the second Maryland State Constitution in 1851. The 1900s saw the establishment of Towson University and the construction of more buildings that remain to this day. After the Second World War, Towson became a Baltimore suburb, and many historic buildings were demolished to build homes.

Today, Towson retains the charm and beauty of its history, while providing modern residents important amenities and offering visitors a lot to see and do. The Hampton National Historic Site preserves the historic Hampton mansion and surrounding grounds, and it’s a great place to have a picnic and learn about local history. Nearby Lake Roland Park also provides valuable opportunities to enjoy the local natural beauty. Visitors can also enjoy a game or show at SECU Arena or shop all day at Towson Town Center.
